About Us
Queensland Suburban Rugby has proudly championed grassroots rugby in Queensland since 1964, building a strong, community-focused competition for clubs across Brisbane. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown into a multi-division league that fosters connection, competition, and passion for the game. Today, we continue to support and strengthen local rugby at every level.
Our History
1888–1890
The foundations of Queensland's lower-tier rugby were laid with the formation of the Minor and Sub-Junior Rugby Unions.
1964
The Queensland Sub-District Rugby Union (QSDRU) was established, kicking off its first season with nine teams.
1965–1966
The competition grew to 19 teams across multiple divisions, and QLD began annual representative matches against Sydney.
1967–1973
The league peaked at 28 teams, with QLD earning its first win over Sydney in 1972 to claim the Barraclough Trophy.
1976–1982
Following consolidation, the Union played a role in QLD Rugby’s centenary, while Ipswich claimed its first A Grade title.
1993
A major restructure saw suburban clubs grouped into a Coca-Cola sponsored competition covering all corners of Brisbane.
1998
With 47 teams from 30 clubs, the QSRU was thriving across five competitive divisions by the end of the Coca-Cola era.
2000s
Colts rugby was phased out from Subbies as clubs shifted divisions and competitions adapted to changing player bases.
Today
The QSRU operates three divisions and five grades, continuing to foster inclusive, grassroots rugby across the region.
